One Day SLAM Airway Provider Course AKA SLAM Express

SLAM - Street Level Airway Management by James Michael Rich, CRNA was published in September 2007 by Brady – Pearson – Prentice Hall.  This will be the textbook for all future courses and is available on our website.

We have revamped the SLAM Express (SLAM Airway Provider Course) to cover the first 8 chapters of the book with 10 hours of lecture and hands-on to include our renowned pig-cricothyrotomy workshop.

Continuing Education is being applied for or is already approved(and has always been approved in the past) to include the following:

AANA

ASTNA

Texas Department of Health

CECBEMS

AMA Category I CME

ACEP

Course Content:

Lectures and hands-on will cover the following:

  1. SLAM Universal Emergency Airway Flowchart (Lecture)
  2. Airway Anatomy and Assessment (Lecture)
  3. Oxygenation and Ventilation in Adults (Lecture)
  4. Direct Laryngoscopy and Tracheal Intubation (Lecture)
  5. Confirmation of Tracheal Intubation and Monitoring of Lung Ventilation (Lecture)
  6. Pharmacology of Airway Management (Lecture)
  7. Rapid Sequence Induction and Intubation in Adults (Lecture)
  8. Rescue Ventilation (Lecture)
  9. Direct laryngoscopy and Tracheal Intubation (Hands-on Station)
  10. Rescue Ventilation (Hands-on Station)
  11. Rescue Intubation (Hands-on Station)
  12. Fiberscopic and Advanced Techniques (Hands-on Station)
  13. Difficult Intubation Options (Hands-on Station)
  14. Pig Cricothyrotomy Lab (Hands-on Lab featuring percutaneous dilational cricothyrotomy, trans-tracheal jet ventilation, and surgical cricothyrotomy)
  15. AirMan Skills Testing Station

Lectures are covered in hours 1 through 4.  In hours 5 through 10 the hands-on portion is presented to include a cricothyrotomy workshop using pig laryngeal-tracheal segments.  A written test is also taken by each attendee.  Participants receive a certificate of completion and a SLAM Airway Provider Card (good for two years).

Cost: $500.00 includes: the SLAM  textbook, Lectures, Hands-on, and Pig Cricothyrotomy lab and *cadaver lab.

These courses will be held at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth unless otherwise specified.  The projected schedule primarily lists UNT at Fort Worth, but other cities will be added based on your requests.  We have listed local hotels for our Fort Worth classes.

Projected Schedule for SLAM 1-Day Course

August 16, 2008                         Fort Worth, Texas

November 23, 2008                     TEXAS EMS

*(Dates may be added or changed depending on circumstances).

Courses in  Fort Worth area will be held At the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

*We only use fresh cadavers which are always subject to availiability.  In the event that cadavers are unavailable we use TruCorp AirSim standard and multi trainers.  We stand by the realism of these airway trainers.  They have no parallel among other airway trainers (with the exception of cadavers).

The AirSim is uniquely constructed to allow realistic feedback during airway management procedures and provides true anatomically correct visually accurate internal features.

The novel neck construction allows the head to be moved in a number of positions. This ranges from the standard "Sniffing the morning air" position to more difficult scenarios.

The AirSim is ideal for training in the use of:

Laryngeal Masks
Full range of supraglottic devices
Laryngoscopes
Tracheal tubes
Fibreoptic Laryngoscopes
Needle Cricothyroidotomy Systems

The unique construction is continued with the AirSim Multi unit.  Additionally a nasal passage and a full face have been developed to facilitate nasal procedures as well as bag and mask ventilation.   The 'Multi' can be used in the training of all the procedures facilitated by the AirSim including:

Laryngeal Masks
Full range of supraglottic devices
Laryngoscopes
Tracheal tubes
Fibreoptic Laryngoscopes
Needle Cricothyroidotomy Systems
Nasal Procedures
The nasal passage has been developed in a manner similar to the main airway. This gives the same anatomical realism and functionality.  In addition the material used offers the same tactile feedback which is delivered with the main airway itself.  These features allow AirSim to be used for training and practice in naso-tracheal intubation and nasally directed fibreoptic examination.  In all cases the model offers a true to life look and feel.
Bag and Mask Procedures
The lower jaw is sculpted from the same material as the head which gives a finished full face with jaw movement to facilitate realistic training in bag and mask ventilation.

TruCorp AirSim Trainers

For too long, health professionals have had to tolerate unrealistic mannequins. TruCorp refuses to accept this and has created AirSim, a highly realistic and functional airway training system.  Conceived and developed by doctors at the Queens University of Belfast in close collaboration with engineers, Airsim sets new standards in medical skills training.

It is invaluable as a training tool in the techniques of laryngoscopy, tracheal intubation, fibre-optic examination and needle cricothyroidotomy.  The product provides a true anatomical fit and seal which makes it indispensable for the training of the insertion of all currently available supraglottic devices.  Airsim has a unique capability for training insertion of double lumen tracheal tubes.

To ensure maximum realism, the AirSim's airway has been created from data collected from a CT scan of a person, is molded in one piece and put through a sophisticated dipping process.  An integrated and seamless construction offers true to life functionality.  The airway unit is manufactured from a polymer compound which gives a positive tactile feedback during and after correct placement of an airway device.  For realism during bronchoscopic examination the airway provides faithful realization of internal anatomical features.

AirSim's tongue has a realistic shape and texture which responds as it would in real life and can be inflated to variable sizes to simulate different swollen tongue scenarios.  The teeth are constructed from denture moulds to truly represent this part of the human anatomy giving excellent realism.  AirSim's jaw has a unique spring loaded mandible allowing jaw thrust and realistic mouth opening together with the full range of jaw and mouth movements.  The neck has a novel joint construction giving a range of extension and flexion.  The AirSim Family have an integrated plinth which is sturdy and stable. It can be easily transported or safely stored in its carry bag.

TruCorp Trainers feature : One-piece seamless construction, human-like tactile feedback during use, faithful visualization of internal features, and an inflatable tongue with real life shape and texture. It also includes a full range of neck movements, a unique capability for insertion of double lumen tracheal tubes, and it is suitable for the insertion of needle cricothyroidotomy systems.
